“Best Start in Life” (BSiL) refers to a broad UK government programme designed to strengthen support for children and families during the earliest and most formative years of life, from pregnancy through to the age of five. The initiative brings together a range of policies and services intended to improve child development outcomes, support parental wellbeing, and reduce inequalities in access to early support.

A key element of the programme is the development of family hubs, which act as local centres where parents, carers, and young children can access coordinated services such as health visiting, parenting advice, early learning support, and family assistance in one place. Alongside this, the initiative places significant emphasis on raising standards within early years education by supporting high-quality learning environments, workforce development, and school readiness for young children.

The programme also includes measures to increase the availability and affordability of childcare, particularly for working families. Through expanded childcare entitlements and additional financial support, the initiative aims to help parents balance employment with family responsibilities while ensuring that children have access to safe, nurturing, and development-focused early years provision.
